What we do know

Hebrews 5:9-10

9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Theme: What we know about Christ: He Loves us, He Saves us, He gives us Eternal life.

Goal: That by His grace and through His Word, God will move us to recognize His love and power in Christ as our Savior, King and Priest.

Other Text: Jeremiah 31: 31-34; Mark 10:35-45

INTRODUCTION: There is a lot we don’t know! This causes us to be troubled and feel fear.

  • The space of time a parent does not know the whereabouts of a child.
  • The period of time that the results of medical exams are being waited on.
  • Such as the student that awaits his final grades at the end of a semester.
  • As with Melchizedek there is a lot we don’t know about him.

I. Abram's need

     a. Abram needs Melchizedek.

  • Abram’s promised son has not arrived.
  • His offspring are not as uncountable as the dust of the earth.
  • God has promised to bless him and make his name great.

     b. However after several years Abram does not have much to show for it all;

  • his situation in life has gotten worse rather than better.
  • He has endured a famine, sought refuge in Egypt, been deported from Egypt and mediated a dispute with his nephew Lot.
  • Just now he has been drawn into a war with Chedorloamer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Atioch king of Ellasar (Gen 14).
  • It shouldn’t have been his fight; he only went off to war to save Lot, who had been taken prisoner.
  • Abram has endured much and still has not yet received the promised heir. At the very least, he needs a sympathetic ear!

    c. But God has something far greater for Abram.

  • As the dust of battle settles, Melchizedek king of Salem Priest of God Most High, suddenly appears to Abram-with bread and wine, no less!
  • He blesses Abram, vindicates him, and defends his cause. And Abram is strengthened to continue patiently waiting for the Lord’s promise.

II. God provides for our needs

     a. Like Melchizedek, Christ enters our life right when we need him, but he never disappears.

  • We Know Christ became man.
  • We know Christ lived a perfect, holy life for you and me.
  • We know that through His death on that cross He canceled our debt to sin.
  • We know of His victory over sin, death and devil, because of His Resurrection.
  • We know it was all done for you and me. (Hebrews 5:9-10)

    b. Christ continues to provide and remains with us even today (Matthew 28:20)

  • through our church, worship and service.
  • His Word
  • His Sacraments (Baptism/ Holy Communion)

Conclusion:

May the certainty of what we do know in Christ sustain, vindicate, equip and defend us as we patiently await on God's promises.
