In His Name, Being One
John 17:11b

Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

Theme: God is with us,

Goal: That by His grace and through his word, God enlighten us to understand, and know and live our love of God, living with Him and in Him.

Other Text: Acts 1:12-26; 1 John 5:9-15.

One summer night during a severe thunderstorm a mother was tucking her small son into bed. She was about to turn the light off when he asked in a trembling voice, "Mommy, will you stay with me all night?" Smiling, the mother gave him a warm, reassuring hug and said tenderly, "I can't dear. I have to sleep in Daddy's room." A long silence followed. At last it was broken by a shaky voice saying, "The big sissy!"

  1. The boy is afraid
  2. In fear the boy responds
  3. There is a chink in unity
  4. Maybe the boy is right….(LOL)

This may seem like a good take off point for a children’s message but fear is not limited to children.

Peladophobia: fear of baldness and bald people.

Aerophobia: fear of drafts.

Porphyrophobia: fear of the color purple.

Chaetophobia: fear of hairy people.

Levophobia: fear of objects on the left side of the body.

Dextrophobia: fear of objects on the right side of the body.

Auroraphobia: fear of the northern lights.

Calyprophobia: fear of obscure meanings.

Thalassophobia: fear of being seated.

Stabisbasiphobia: fear of standing and walking.

Odontophobia: fear of teeth.

Graphophobia: fear of writing in public.

Phobophobia: fear of being afraid.

Fraser Kent, Nothing to Fear, , Doubleday & Company, 1977.

I. Fear is a real and also a grown up problem.

      a. What are some things you’re afraid of?

      b. How do you react?

      c.  What does God say/do?

2. In our text, there is much the disciples would fear.

     a. these words were given on Maundy Thursday evening, mere hours before He was betrayed and
beaten and tortured and ultimately put to death.

     b. the disciples in just a few hours, in fear would react and abandon Jesus and forsake Him, in
order to save their own hides.

     c. Jesus knew how these disciples would respond (in Fear) of seeing their hope and joy beaten
down, humiliated and nailed to the cross, forsaken and cursed by God Himself.

    d. It is quite understandable, they would want out.

3. FEAR was part of it all.

     a. What are some things they were afraid of?

     b. How did they react?

     c. What did God say/do?

He prayed for them:
Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

4. The significance of that name

   a. Moses can assist us, It is that God/ name that:

  • God/ the Great I Am called Moses.
  • Sent Moses, Empowered Moses.
  •  Provided (water, Food, direction, protection).
  • Was faithful (received him into His presence).

   b. It was that God/name that promised a Savior (His Son).

   c. It was that Son that in oneness of love and will with that God/Name:

  • Fulfilled His (that God’s/ that Name) promise.
  • Took on human-ness.
  • Affirmed His face towards Jerusalem (not because there was nothing to fear but because God   was with Him).
  • The example of the Movie “A Night with the King”
(Esther’s recount of David’s victory over Goliath ( It was not because he faught well but because he believed well) David faced Goliath in the Name of God.
  • Jesus didn’t only know that God the Father was with Him but being God himself it was His will to save us. There was unity. THEY ARE ONE.

We have not spoken of the Holy Spirit I only make mention for clarity. We as a church understand and confess a Holy Trinity. With that being said in our text we see what glorious grace is fulfilled by the Father through His Son. We see that they are really ONE.

In the power of God’s name, in the unity with His Son we now come to understand where is God in light of a fear-filled world. We now see what He does,we can now see His will through this prayer.

Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

God always and faithfully answers Jesus prayer for His disciples, His Church, His children and for you. You now have nothing to fear.

  • In our Confesion. (we are forgiven)
  • In your Baptism. (we are made His children)
  • In today’s participation of the Lord’s Supper. (we are given sustenance for TRUE LIFE)
  • In the Benediction. (His name is on us, we will be blessed)

All fear is overcome because we are redeemed, restored, made one with God and each other. Don’t stray your eyes away from Christ and Christ Crucified.

Be fearless be one.
